Trial of the pyx: Celebrating British Craftsmanship, Precision and Heritage

Last week, Naomi Newton-Sherlock, Creative Director, attended the historic Trial of the Pyx, representing Domino Jewellery and Weston Beamor at one of the United Kingdom's oldest and most prestigious ceremonies. For over 700 years, the Trial of the Pyx has safeguarded the accuracy and quality of British coinage. Held annually at Goldsmiths' Hall in London and overseen by The Goldsmiths' Company, the ceremony independently tests coins produced by The Royal Mint to ensure they meet strict standards for weight, composition and precision.

During the ceremony, a random sample of coins is selected and set aside for detailed scientific testing. An independent jury - traditionally made up of members of The Goldsmiths’ Company - is sworn in to oversee the process. The coins are then rigorously analysed to confirm they meet legal standards.

The Trial plays a critical role in maintaining public trust in UK currency, combining centuries-old tradition with modern analytical methods.

The Importance of Standards in British Manufacturing

As British jewellery manufacturers, Domino Jewellery and Weston Beamor share many of the same values that underpin the Trial of the Pyx: precision, accountability and uncompromising quality. In jewellery manufacturing, accuracy is essential - from alloy composition and metal purity to diamond setting and finishing. Like the coinage tested at the Trial, every piece must meet exacting standards before it reaches the customer. Attending the Trial of the Pyx is a powerful reminder of the heritage of British craftsmanship and the systems of scrutiny that protect it.
